episode 21: tricia's tomatoes official summer guide !!!
what to watch, read, and where to find us alllllllllll summer long
HAPPY SUMMER bc FAM! Wednesday’s Summer Solstice marked the OFFICIAL start to my favorite season !!! From now until September 23rd we live our lives like school’s out baby!
A lot of people are Summer Haters. It’s one of the few things my bestie (screenname: Autumn_Girl19) and my husband disagree with me on. I understand their complaints. It’s hot as hell, you’re dripping sweat, fall clothes >, school isn’t literally out - we still have to work, and it can trigger a lot of violent fomo that you’re the only one who isn’t in Italy or the South of France (ok maybe that’s more of a year round problem for moiiiiii). BUT YOU KNOW WHAT:
WHAT HE SAID !!! We put together this guide to ensure you LEAN IN and listen to my man (a fellow August 4th Leo) Kyle Cooke’s mantra this year. Summer is OUR season at tricia’s tomatoes and below is everything we’ll be watching, reading, and doing over the next 12 weeks !!!!
PSA - this is long, but sectioned out and designed to be referenced over and over as you need content / something to do this summer.
let’s start with WATCHING !!! Summer 2023 is for the movies babes! there’s some great TV too. The below list is organized in chronological order of release date AND I did God’s work by including trailers.
Remember here at tricia’s tomatoes, we’re Team Work from Home, Watch from the Theater. I don’t know if/when most of the below *films* are streaming and I don’t care. The future of tricia’s tomatoes depends on you GOING to the movies! You’ll find us at the Lower Manhattan Alamo Drafthouse and it’s always an open invite!
Never Have I Ever - all epis streaming on Netflix
Mindy Kaling’s high school / coming of age, straight laugh a minute comedy. Hilarious and so, so sweet. Not only do I LOL at every line but so does my husband so it’s fun for the whole family, including Virgos! I already finished it, but you should download some episodes for your next hungover flight home.
Past Lives - currently out in theaters
A24. Greta Lee. Just watch the trailer. Amazing reviews from people I trust. I will be seeing it ASAP.
Righteous Gemstones - weekly epis every Sunday started June 18 on MAX
I’m not sure I can be friends with anyone who doesn’t find Danny McBride’s take on a dysfunctional + corrupt Megachurch/televangelist Succession-esque family absolutely hysterical.
The Bear - all epis streaming YESTERDAY June 22 on Hulu
YES CHEF !
And Just Like That - new epis every thurs starting YESTERDAY June 22 on MAX
Vanity Fair says the second season of the SATC reboot is not too bad! “Or maybe we’ve lowered our expectations” Whatever! I was going to watch regardless because I love anything cute, campy, and a little cringey!
Asteroid City - Theaters June 23
If bird watching is a sport, then so is spotting every famous person in a Wes Anderson movie. TBH, not my fav of his films. Also general PSA - you can’t use the Wes Anderson TikTok trend until you see at least 3 of his films. I don’t make the rules!
No Hard Feelings - Theaters June 23
When I read the premise of this movie + saw a teaser trailer, I will admit I thought “Really J.Law?”, but the reviews are outstanding so far! Gerry aka J. Smith Cameron saw it the other day and called it a “Really good Summer Movie!” In GERRY WE TRUST!
Indiana Jones - Theaters June 30
Can you believe my husband has never seen a single Indiana Jones movie?!?! He has 2 more weeks to catch up. I’ll be there for my fav Phoebe Waller-Bridge, in addition to Handsome Harrison. Though I love him the MOST in Shrinking, something you should also watch this Summer if you haven’t.
P.S. Mike has also never seen The Goonies or ET !!! @Mom @My Sibs - shook!
Joy Ride - Theaters July 7
Looks like a cute, campy, and a little cringey summer flick! Bonus points for same writer/producers as a TT absolute FAV Crazy Rich Asians and also Neighbors.
Theater Camp - Theaters July 14
I am still recovering from the 8ish years I did musical theater and have absolutely nothing to show for it but I’m ready to be hurt again!
BARBIE - Theaters July 21
You know how schools, offices, families etc make emergency plans? Like in case of a natural disaster / terrorist attack my husband and I have a plan to meet and escape together even if our phones aren’t working. It’s about damn time you and your loved ones MAKE YOUR EMERGENCY PLAN on when/where you’re seeing Barbie.
Oppenheimer - Theaters July 21
If you’re not on Oppenheimer vs. Barbie twitter just google it.
Minx - a MAX casualty ( a deep mistake) moving to STARZ streaming July 21
70’s LA, a feminist porno magazine, and New Girl’s Jake Johnson looking like a SLEAZY SNACK!
Only Murders in the Building - weekly epis released every tues starting August 8 on Hulu
ONLY Steve Martin and Martin Short can make Selena Gomez borderline charming. Paul Rudd and Meryl Streep guest star this season! How the hell did Selener get this gig over me?!
Red White and Royal Blue - Streaming on Prime Video August 11
LOVED this book! And even if I didn’t / wasn’t excited for this one we’d all still be watching it because we’re officially a part of the Amazon Studios Family <3 <3 IYKYK
Bottoms - Theaters August 25
IDK how to describe this film I just KNOWWWWW I am going to love it. You should also see last Summer’s Bodies, Bodies, Bodies
Challengers - Theaters September 15
Team TT’s most anticipated summer release, second ONLY TO BARBIE. I knew very little about this movie, just that Zendaya had partnered with Luca (director of Call Me By Your Name) and the trailer just about blew my mind. Z in a spicy, SPICY love triangle with Mike Faist and none other than my (probably) cousin Josh O’Connor! I DIE! HOWEVER, PROMISE ME, PROMISE you’ll watch one of my all time favorite rom coms Wimbledon this Summer too. Ideally during the weeks of July 3- July 16.
Drive-Away Dolls - Theaters September 22
Trailer is not yet on YouTube but can report it’s fully airing in the theaters!!!!!!! Looks like you gotta go to the goddamn movies! Ethan Coen + his wife Tricia Cooke (Barbarino) wrote this film that looks to be right up out alleys.
next up - READING IS SEXY !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Though I’ve been slacking lately…. based on the above I MIGHT be watching too much shit… hmm… Anyway I love bragging about being an English major and will truly read anything. My preferred genre is well written/not stupid but must keep my TikTok ruined brain entertained. Can I call my taste Lowbrow Brilliant?!
Please drop any recs in the comments but here are my current Summer Reading Assignments -
I’m in my wannabe Dolly Alderton era so I recently read Ghosts and Everything I Know About Love <3
Don’t shame me for not having read Tomorrow, Tomorrow, and Tomorrow yet! I’m doing it!
Sirens and Muses - recommended by my pal
!!!another preferred genre is elitist school dramas - The Secret History is one of my all time favs and I LOVED The Shards
Glossy - doesn’t come out until 9/12 UGH CAN SOMEONE GET ME AN ADVANCED COPY! I’M AN OG GLOSSIER GIRL!!!!! I LIVED IT!
Obviously I WILL BE reading SCAMMER. ANXIOUSLY awaiting my preorder !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I do fall for Emily Henry’s shit so I’m sure I’ll read Happy Place and I haven’t read Book Lovers yet. Also an unapologetic Elin Hildebrand girlie so hard yes to the latest The Five Star Weekend releasing this month.
BTW - If a celebrity narrates their memoir’s audio book, I WILL listen to it. Current hot girl walks are brought to you by Andy Cohen’s Daddy Diaries. As if I haven’t already given Andy Cohen enough of my time AND, by the transitive property - money, I directly contributed to Ben and Lucy’s college fund after listening to him plug this book on Watch What Happens Live for 2 straight months. It’s easy, happy, very NYC, and has great BTS intel on all his famous friends. Next up is Paris Hilton’s memoir.
SUMMER IS ALSO FOR MAGAZINES! PUT DOWN YOUR PHONE (me to me) and go buy some GD PRINT! You should never be without something to read, especially in the Summer! Waiting for your friends, early for a workout class, taking a long lunch, at the airport, etc! Do the publishing industry a favor and buy a f*cking magazine! AND/OR steal a Sunday New York Times from your neighborhood Starbucks. Trust me, Howard Shultz can afford your petty theft. I subscribe to New York Magazine live in technicolor print and I love it!
LASTLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! LET’S HANG !!!!
here’s where you’ll find me this Summer !!!! Open invite always!
