GOOD MORNING HOLLYWOOD !!!!!
(to the tune of Good Morning Baltimore, I just watched Hairspray)
This morning bright and early Zazie Beats and Jack Quaid (Dennis Quaid and Meg Ryan’s child, you know we love a Nepo Baby) announced the nominees of the 96th Academy Awards to an auditorium of sleepy journalists.
In another life I myself woke up at 5 am PST in my Malibu beach house. I had to escape the city for some much needed zen on such a stressful morning. Only the sound of the waves could lull me to sleep last night. BUT ALL THAT STRESS WAS FOR NOTHING! I GOT THE CALL!! Tricia’s Tomatoes Studios received it’s first ever Oscar nomination(s) !!!!
In reality I’m just avoiding my day j*b of peddling American Eagle boxer briefs. If there’s one thing the Oscars teaches us it’s that ~a girl can dream~…………………………and only dream based on some of this year’s nominations 🥁☠️
We’ll get into it in full detail by category below, but let’s just say the population of SNUB CITY skyrocketed this morning. Also Barbie may have won the Box Office Battle, but it looks like Oppenheimer will win the Awards Season War. Not that Oppenheimer doesn’t deserve all it’s love, I’m just partial to my Barbzzzz.
Today is an emotional day! High highs, low lows! I was pretty SALTY but then I watched a twitter thread of all these teams reacting the life changing recognition that is an Oscar nomination. Pure! I have roses (4/5 Best Supporting Actor hotties) and thorns (Best Actress/Director) to report on, but my BUD (Best Picture) is that there’s (hopefully) a lot of potential for excitement and surprise on the big night! I’m not pleased Jimmy Kimmel is hosting again, but that’s a topic for a different day.
BEST PICTURE
American Fiction
Anatomy of a Fall
Barbie
The Holdovers
Killers of the Flower Moon
Maestro
Oppenheimer
Past Lives
Poor Things
The Zone of Interest
TT: No real surprises or snubs here. Overall this year’s nominees are across a good mix of genres! You have your commercial blockbusters, comedies, NICE stories, A24 ass FILMS, biopics etc. You’ve probably actually heard of most of these movies even if you’re not on the Film Twitter algorithm and/or Letterboxd. That’s not always the case! I still have 3 left to see, but I am always available to recommend what you should watch based on your ~mood~ over the next couple of weeks!
BEST DIRECTOR
Jonathan Glazer - The Zone of Interest
Yorgos Lanthimos - Poor Things
Christopher Nolan - Oppenheimer
Martin Scorsese - Killers of the Flower Moon
Justine Triet - Anatomy of a Fall
TT: Greta Gerwig - SNUBBED, ROBBED, BURNED. Celine Song (Past Lives) - DISRESPECTED. Maybe the Academy needs to start separating out Female Director and Male Director since they’re INCAPABLE of nominating more than one woman at a time 😤😤😤😤😤
BTW I bet my husband ONE million dollars Greta would be nominated after watching the first full trailer of Barbie. Please NO ONE remind him of that, I’m cash poor rn.
BEST ACTOR
Bradley Cooper - Maestro
Colman Domingo - Rustin
Paul Giamatti - The Holdovers
Cillian Murphy - Oppenheimer
Jeffrey Wright - American Fiction
TT: Leo SNUB! No one is mad. I was sick of him by the end of KOFM’s THREE HOURS AND TWENTY SIX MINS.
Andrew Scott (All of Us Strangers) SNUB 💔💔💔💔💔💔
ZEFRON (Iron Claw) SNUB too! He’s less of a SNUB and more that I personally was rooting for the High School Musical to Oscar Nomination Coming of Age story. If we’re gonna talk ZEFRON SNUBS that was really Hairspray ‘07/’08.
Ayo Edebiri was manifesting a nom for him, but her spell casting powers must’ve run dry after ONE BIG WEEK OF Ws - Golden Globes, Critics Choice, and Emmys - YGG.
BEST ACTRESS
Lily Gladstone - Killers of the Flower Moon
Sandra Hüller - Anatomy of a Fall
Carey Mulligan - Maestro
Emma Stone - Poor Things
Annette Bening - Nyad
TT: I’m fuming about this category. I really am. KEN getting nominated but NOT BARBIE?! REALLY RICH @! THE PATRIARCHY !!!!
Snubbing Greta Lee for Past Lives, ABSOLUTELY TRAGIC. Granted I haven’t seen Nyad yet, but I don’t know if Annette Bening deserves it over Margot, Greta, and even Natalie Portman!??! It’s giving To Leslie. I loved Rachel McAdams in Are You There God? It’s me, Margaret! UGH. So many great performances this year. Let’s Scrap Best Actor and Do Best Actress twice! Or do two best actresses over Best Supporting Actress. I am so happy for my fellow blonde bob Carey Mulligan- someone I consider a close personal friend lol. I’m not saying just yet but I think I’m voting for my former neighbor……
BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR
Sterling K. Brown - American Fiction
Robert DeNiro - Killers of the Flower Moon
Robert Downey Jr. - Oppenheimer
Ryan Gosling - Barbie
Mark Ruffalo - Poor Things
TT: OKAY HOT GUYS! This is a good looking, talented group that gave great performances. I’m missing two young cuties Charles Melton (May December) and Dominic Sessa (The Holdovers). I would’ve subbed one of those young guns in for DeNiro, but I can live with this.
BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS
Emily Blunt - Oppenheimer
Danielle Brooks - The Color Purple
Jodie Foster - Nyad
America Ferrera - Barbie
Da’Vine Joy Randolph - The Holdovers
TT: I feel sharing my true gut reactions to this lineup makes it sound like I’m putting women down / pitting them against each other. Last year was much stronger?!?!? Though the wrong person won LOL so IDK! Julianne Moore would’ve been nice here. Jodie Foster, haven’t we been there done that? Emily Blunt was GOOD, BETTER in Devil Wears Prada. She’s riding that Oppy Wave. Nice to see The Color Purple get at least one nom.
Perhaps a controversial statement but America Ferrera - one singular strong monologue (strong WRITING IMO) does not make an Oscar worthy performance. I don’t believe she should’ve been the sole female acting nominee from such a powerhouse female cast. For her to get nominated but neither Margot nor Greta in their respective categories…………...
I am rooting for Da’Vine Joy Randolph.
BEST ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY
Anatomy of a Fall
The Holdovers
May December
Past Lives
Maestro
TT: UHH SALTBURN SNUB MUCH! LOL JK. Last night when I was researching I saw Variety predicted Saltburn to edge in over May December. I got my hopes up just to see something so wild, talked about, and controversial spice up this category. I like Emerald Fennell, but really I was rooting for Barry and Jacob to be invited. Maybe they’ll present, I digress. In my truly DREAM WORLD Bottoms would’ve made this list, but the real Academy doesn’t like to laugh as much as we do. Only this 1 nom for May December is a tough break for them.
BEST ADAPTED SCREENPLAY
American Fiction
Barbie
Oppenheimer
Poor Things
The Zone of Interest
TT: 3/5 based on books! One of my collegiate regrets is not trying as hard as I should’ve in my final English elective, Books into Movies. The teacher was a weirdo and it was second semester senior year. I wish I took that class more seriously since it’s become one of my key interests. I guess maybe I’m writing (no pun intended) that wrong now. Anyway… Why is Barbie adapted and not original? Because she’s an existing IP and the film is based upon a world of characters previously created by Mattel. They WANTED it to compete within Original because based on the above it probably would’ve won, where here it’s odds are not as favorable given the Oppy of it all. (It’s slated within original screenplay for the Writers Guild awards and BAFTAs as each voting body/awards committee has their own rules. Rando thought but do they play with Barbie in the UK?)
Obvi these are just the key big name categories. A full list of nominees can be found at whatever dot com you get your snark-less, unbiased, less rambling, and ultimately un-fun daily news!
What are your Roses, Thorns, and Buds of the 96th Academy Awards Nominees?!?!? Sound off in the comments or just text me.
