hello and good morning Hollywood!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! the day has ARRIVED!!!!!
This is our Superbowl, our Christmas, it’s the BEST SUNDAY OF THE YEAR!!! the sun is SHINING in the great city of Los Angeles and we are READY!
I gotta say i’m a little hungover writing to you all right now. I went too hard at a pre Oscar party last night. Bury me at Chateau Marmont! ALAS i am prevailing but I really wish I was podcasting and voice noting to you all, typing is a bit challenging. My commentary might be more unhinged than normal today. First truth- I couldn’t make it through Zone of Interest and switched to Anyone But You after 40 mins. I paid $19.99 for both of them.
Most important to note the big event starts at 7PM tonight on ABC!!!! And we sprung forward last night so it’s EXTRA early. The Red Carpet starts at 4 on E! My plan is to watch E! from 4-6:30 and then at 6:30 switch over to ABC for the “Official” Pre-show. Laverne Cox is hosting E’s red carpet and Vanessa Hudgens is on duty at ABC. There’s been some particularly BAD red carpet interviews this year and while I find it extremely bizarre my high school musical girlie Vanessa has found a side hustle in hosting these, she’s actually good. TG. Laverne is a professional as well but I’m sure there will still be some awkward moments. If you’re not ready to make this a full day starting at 4PM EST (one hour from now lol) - Vogue.com does a pretty good job of uploading photos of everyone as they arrive and honestly you can watch it all play out on instagram too.
You are all are honorary members of MY academy, but I do want to give a few shoutouts to some extra special members of the community for all their contributions this season.
West Coast Office & our Industry Insider, my right hands I couldn’t do it without them!
My brother Gavin - film buff extraordinaire - I think he’s annoyed I didn’t like Anatomy of a Fall
My parents! They watched ALL of the movies just for me!!!! My mom loved Killers of the Flower Moon! Go off!
Our subsidiary Brie’s Cheese - a true patron of the arts
And of course Tricia’s Tomatoes C.F.O. Box Office Botz. A soulmate so good he must be scripted!
It was a BANNER YEAR FOR FILM! BarbenHeimer will go down in history! The movies were excellent AND watchable blockbusters! I bet everyone has seen at least 3-4 Best Picture Nominees without even trying. I do have a feeling it’s going to be an Oppenheimer sweep which doesn’t make for the most exciting show, but it does probably deserve it.
Kimmel is hosting again. I really don’t like him you guys idk why. He just gives me the ICK. Fallon > > > > Kimmel. Last year Box Office Botz and I made a list of all the people off the top of our heads we’d ask to host and it still stands -
BTW I cannot STFU about how much I loved Dune Deux!!!! I hope that cast is there today. Go see it this week!
As I said, I predict it’s going to be all about Oppenheimer so I don’t have as many hot takes as I did last year!
BEST PICTURE
American Fiction
Anatomy of a Fall
Barbie
The Holdovers
Killers of the Flower Moon
Maestro
Oppenheimer
Past Lives
Poor Things
The Zone of Interest
TT: Oppenheimer will win, end of story. I think it’s more interesting when (though it rarely happens) the academy splits Best Director and Best Picture. I would rather see Christopher Nolan win Best Director and American Fiction or Barbie win Best Picture. OMG if Barbie won best picture I would DIE lol. My top 5 were Oppenheimer, Barbie, American Fiction, The Holdovers, and Past Lives. Every movie on this list is worth watching, again cannot say that every year! MANY ~Buy on iTunes~ films!!!!!
BEST DIRECTOR
Jonathan Glazer - The Zone of Interest
Yorgos Lanthimos - Poor Things
Christopher Nolan - Oppenheimer
Martin Scorsese - Killers of the Flower Moon
Justine Triet - Anatomy of a Fall
TT: Christopher Nolan is winning. Not even up for discussion.
BEST ACTOR
Bradley Cooper - Maestro
Colman Domingo - Rustin
Paul Giamatti - The Holdovers
Cillian Murphy - Oppenheimer
Jeffrey Wright - American Fiction
TT: I would really LOVE to see Paul Giamatti win and he’s who I would be voting for, but it has to be Cillian. Jeffery Wright is so goddamn funny too. Bradley Cooper is a try hard. Him and Gigi will be hard launching their “relationship” on the Red Carpet tonight BTW.
BEST ACTRESS
Lily Gladstone - Killers of the Flower Moon
Sandra Hüller - Anatomy of a Fall
Carey Mulligan - Maestro
Emma Stone - Poor Things
Annette Bening - Nyad
TT: This might be the only race of the night that’s truly contentious! I got into a fight at my local funky wine store about it! Simply Wine on Liberty Street is a safe space lol. It is between Lily Gladstone and Emma Stone. I really don’t know who is going to win! They both won Globes, Emma Stone the BAFTA, Lily the Critics Choice Award and the SAG. It’s tied up! I am voting for my bestie neighbor Emma Stone, but I truly could see Lily winning. EVERYONE loves her.
BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR
Sterling K. Brown - American Fiction
Robert DeNiro - Killers of the Flower Moon
Robert Downey Jr. - Oppenheimer
Ryan Gosling - Barbie
Mark Ruffalo - Poor Things
TT: This is my favorite category this year! So much fun! I am a little disappointed that RDJ is probably going to win as good as he is, because there’s so many fun performances here! Sterling K Brown is SOOOOOOOOO good in American Fiction. I’m Just Ken?!?!?!??! I would be voting for Mark Ruffalo. As weird as Poor Things was I am a fan! He was great.
BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS
Emily Blunt - Oppenheimer
Danielle Brooks - The Color Purple
Jodie Foster - Nyad
America Ferrera - Barbie
Da’Vine Joy Randolph - The Holdovers
TT: Da’Vine Joy Randolph is going to win and she deserves it. What a lovely performance. She’s been PISSING me off though at every single awards show coming up there reading off a piece of paper. Speak from the heart babe! You’ve been winning every single show, you know you’re going to win!
BEST ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY
Anatomy of a Fall
The Holdovers
May December
Past Lives
Maestro
TT: Past Lives should win. IT SHOULD WIN!!!!! A beautifully written film!!!! I think Anatomy of a Fall will though. I just really did not love that movie. Box Office Botz HAAAAATED it. I’m on Anatomy of a Fall TikTok now which is actually making me like it more than I did originally lol see below, but it did not live up to ALL the hype.
BEST ADAPTED SCREENPLAY
American Fiction
Barbie
Oppenheimer
Poor Things
The Zone of Interest
TT: There is only one clear winner here and I know you know what I’m going to say!!!!! Give it to Greta and Noah!!!!!!!!!! I am watching Barbie again as I write this!!!!!! I don’t even want to entertain another movie winning though I know any of these could, it’s a stacked category. I believe deeply in the power of manifestation as you all know so I am casting all the spells to see my girl GG up there with a statue tonight!
Okay I think that’s it! I feel disappointed, I definitely had more to say last year, but so many of the races just feel so locked up!!! Whatever it’s still a great day to have a great day!!!! Time to print your ballots and pop the bubbly! I’ll be on my phone all night so tweet/text/DM me your thoughts as you’re watching! I can’t WAIT TO SEE WHAT EVERYONE’S WEARING!!!! Oscars Baby!!!!
ciao!
